Natural Connections
Explores how we are aware of many of the global threats to our natural world, however, we have become removed with regards to the intimacy we have with it. Growing research shows that the next generation is suffering from what has been termed ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ with a vast amount of research showing how this is detrimental to an individual's health.
Students will work collaboratively in finding connections they have with the environment around them and explore ways of re/connecting with our natural world.

ACTIVITY: MEMORY MAP - YOUR JOURNEY TO SCHOOL
How connected are you with your surrounding environment. Plot a mental map of your route from home to school. This should be done from memory and you should try and note down as many features and landmarks as you can about your route. Now come together in groups of 4 or 5 and share your journeys. Each of you must present your journey and identify the landmarks and features that are important to them. Other members in the group must practise active listening strategies and then ask questions of each other after each member has spoken. |
ACTIVITY: HOW NATURE MAKES US FEEL
Watch ‘Seen Through My Eyes’ the award winning timelapse video of Hong Kong. Can you identify any of these places as you watch this video.
Share your feelings with a partner once you have watched this film. Did it stir any unexpected emotions? Do you feel like they want to see this in person? Can they find any connections with any memories when watching this?

ACTIVITY: CATCH THE PREY
In the group one of you is the bat and one is a moth. The rest of you must hold hands and form a circle. The bat is blindfolded and has to try and catch the moth within the circle. To find the moth the student playing the bat has to ‘click’. Every time the bat clicks the moth has to say ‘echo’ while still moving around the circle. If the bat gets too close to the circle the students forming the circle say ‘crash’. At the end and for a bonus challenge, ask students to find out a little more about the whole process of bat echolocation for next week. Bats in fact make up half of the animal species here in Hong Kong with 27 different registered species in total. |
