ACTIVITY: The First Decrees of the Sovnarkom
In the worksheet below, explain what each of the decrees made by the Sovnarkom entailed. Then consider the following groups of people (Women worker, Tsarist Army Officer, Industrialist, Social Revolutionary, Peasant) – decide which of Lenin’s actions would have been popular with which groups of people. Rank these Decrees in order of popularity. For the top three state why you feel that would have increased support for Lenin the most. Then for the most unpopular three decrees state why you feel that the people would have disliked them the most.

ACTIVITY: Who were the Reds & the Whites
In 1918, shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, war broke out in Russia. The two sides were called the ‘Reds’ and the ‘Whites’. In the worksheet below their are a number of groups of individuals - Shade each one to show who you think would have been ‘Red’ and who would have been ‘White’. Add into the box a note to suggest the reason for the side they took.

Review the worksheet below and cut the cards out for the reasons that the Reds won the Civil War and reorder them as a diamond with the factor you feel was the most significant for the reds success at the top and the least significant at the bottom. Glue these into your book or on a sheet a paper and give it a title.

CONSOLIDATION ACTIVITY: How did the Bolsheviks keep power after 1917?
PART 1: In groups of three come up with categories that you might use to sort the 10 causes given in the hexagons worksheet below. PART 2: From the notes that you have taken add any additional causes and/or further contextual detail to the the 10 causes given in the blank hexagons. PART 3: Glue all the hexagons to the page in categories and show how the evidence you have given is linked by having the hexagon touch another. PART4: Draw lines between the different causes in other categories and on these lines explain how the causes are linked.
